Compaq
Company profile (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/)
From "Compatibility and Quality" is the acronym
"COMPAQ" made. Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto,
three senior managers from the semiconductor manufacturing
company Texas Instruments, founded the company in 1982. They
all invested $1000 each with the venture capital coming from
Ben Rosen and Sevin-Rosen partners. In November 1982, it announced
its first product the Compaq Portable that was an IBM PC compatible
personal computer. It was released in March 1983 at a price
of $2995, which was much lower than the competitors' prices.
It was a huge commercial success with 53,000 units being sold
in its first year only. During Rod Canion's tenure as CEO,
the company saw unprecedented growth, setting records unparalleled
in the history of American business. It reached the $1 billion
revenue mark faster than any other company in history and
reached the Fortune 500 listing. By 1991, Compaq operated
in 65 countries worldwide employing more than 10,000 people.
In 1991, Compaq's Chairman Ben Rosen dismissed Rod Canion,
after the company missed a quarterly target. Eckhard Pfeiffer
succeeded him, but had little vision and was forced out in
1999 by Ben Rosen. He was replaced by Michael Capellas who
was also replaced by HP CEO Carly Fiorina, who opted to leave
in February 2005 giving the reins to Mark Hurd, who is the
current CEO of HP. Until 2002, Compaq Computer Corporation
remained an independent corporation when it was bought over
by Hewlett Packard. Now Compaq is a subsidiary of HP. It is
headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA.
Pros and cons
Compaq Presario notebook PCs are stylish, performance oriented,
robust and efficient. They have AMD Sempron/ Turion 64/ Intel
Core&8482 Duo processors. The display is from 14 inch
to 15.4 inch WXGA high-definition widescreen with BrightView
option. With 5 to 7 pounds in weight the Compaq Presario notebook
series are ideal for traveling. The coating is durable and
has Imprint finish. It has a unique inlaid design. The battery
needs improvement as it drains very fast and needs constant
recharging. The Compaq Armada laptop series has great storage
but the touchpad mouse is not very sensitive. This series
uses Intel processors as the Presario series uses mostly AMD
processors. The keyboard is also a little too compact. The
overall functioning is good, and comes with Windows XP Home/Professional
preloaded. The Compaq Armada notebook computer series has
very good speed and is highly portable at below five pounds.
The look and feel is also good. The Compaq Evo series is a
good choice, excepting the sound quality needs improvement.
Overall, the performance of Compaq Evo series is acceptable.
