Sony Vaio
Company profile (http://www.sony.com/)
Headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan, Sony Corporation
is a Japanese multinational corporation. It is one of the
world's largest media conglomerates with interests in electronics,
communications, video, and information technology products
for the professional and the consumer markets. Sony Corporation
was founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita on May 7, 1946.
It's present name "Sony" was adopted in 1958. The
word "Sony" is a mixture of the Latin word sonus,
the root of sound and sonic, the word Sonny-boys meaning "whiz
kids" in Japanese slang, and the English work "sunny".
"Sonny" sounded like "soh-nee" which in
Japanese means "business goes bad". This prompted
Akio Morita to want a word that did not exist in any language,
so that they could claim the word was made by them and belonged
to them. Thus, the word "Sony" came into existence.
Sony Corporation mainly comprises of Sony Electronics (US),
Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony BMG Music Entertainment,
Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Financial Holdings, Sony
BMG (50%), Sony Marketing, Sony Life, Sony Assurance, and
Sony Bank. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005, it recorded
a consolidated annual sale of approximately $67 billion.
Pros and cons
The Sony Vaio VX88 has a14" screen, which is big enough
for a slim and ultra notebook computer. It has built-in WiFi,
Sony memory stick, and the touchpad mouse works superb. The
only problem is the hard disk. It produces a lot of whirring
and clicking noise. The noise may be due to the fan also.
The sound level is high enough to be heard from a distance
and without earplugs or something similar, it seems almost
impossible to work on this laptop. The Vaio Village site does
have links to fixes and some information on how to fix it,
as they consider that due to the small real estate available,
some insulating buffer around the hard disk has been compromised,
resulting in the noise. The keyboard has small function keys
and a tiny small right shift key. Without looking at the keyboard,
it is a big task to hit the small right shift key on target.
The metal like look and feel are excellent and the battery
life is exceptional. The integrated WiFi works fine and a
DVD/CD-R is almost a bonus attached in this very light, easy
to carry laptop. However, Sony support services have much
left to be desired. The FireWire port is extremely useful.
The Sony VAIO VGN-T350P is an exceptional notebook, the first
notebook PC with a built-in EDGE radio. It is ideal for road
warriors who are more interested in convenience rather than
speed. With a single interface, T350P's cellular, WiFi, and
Bluetooth connections are managed with ease. On the right
of the widescreen, the antenna for the EDGE connection sits
flush with the system. The ports are nicely arranged with
three USB ports, FireWire, a Memory Stick slot, a VGA, and
a PC Card slot on the left side, with the RJ-45 and the RJ-11
jacks on the right side. The battery life is impressive, lasting
for almost five hours on a charge. The keyboard may seem a
little cramped for users with big hands; however, within a
few days one gets accustomed to the layout. The speed is a
bit slow but with Cingular launching its HSDPA network, the
speed should improve to 400 to 700 Kbps range. The software
is packed with multimedia applications, including PictureGear
Studio for handling digital images, VAIO Zone for playing
DVDs and CDs, Microsoft Works 8.0, and Intuit Quicken 2005
makes an attractive software bundle. This is the first notebook
to be marketed with a built-in cellular modem. This notebook
computer offers portability, endurance, convenience, and is
worth the investment.
